Background In 1974 and 1975, a study of Peruvian archaeological obsidian at the Lawrence
Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) identified a distinctive chemical composition of
obsidian utilized in artifacts. For ease of reference it was called Pampas Type obsidian.
Pampas Type obsidian was one of eleven common kinds of obsidian utilized in pre-Hispanic
