Neutron activation analysis of a large sample of obsidian artifacts from Early Horizon and
First Intermediate sites in the Basin of Mexico has allowed identification of the geologic
sources that were exploited. Combining the geologic source data with obsidian
manufacturing data in a diachronic fashion permits one to suggest a series of obsidian
utilization stages that correlate with growing cultural complexity.
Abstract
Neutron activation analysis of a large sample of obsidian artifacts from Early Horizon and First Intermediate sites in the Basin of Mexico has allowed identification of the geologic sources that were exploited. Combining the geologic source data with obsidian manufacturing data in a diachronic fashion permits one to suggest a series of obsidian utilization stages that correlate with growing cultural complexity.
