Abstract
The purpose of this book is to describe the key features of marking methods that have particular relevance to New Zealand wildlife species. The information presented in this book refers mainly to methods that have been or may be used to mark New Zealand wildlife. Information on other species is also included when there are no reports of marking similar New Zealand species. The effects of the application, wearing and observation of identifying marks are discussed. The appropriate methods for marking amphibians, reptiles, cetaceans and pinnepids are described. The marking methods applied are painting; dyeing; attached devices; hair removal; fluorescent powders; radioisotope marking; tags; collars, harnesses or bands; nocturnal lights; telemetry; hot branding; freeze branding; chemical branding; tattooing; passive integrated transponders; visible implants fluorescent elastomer tags; tissue removal; autotransplantation and vital stains.
