The extended ROSAT-ESO Flux Limited X-ray Galaxy Cluster Survey (REFLEX II)-IV. X-ray luminosity function and first constraints on cosmological parameters

H Bhringer, G Chon, CA Collins- Astronomy & Astrophysics, 2014 - aanda.org
The X-ray luminosity function that is closely related to the cluster mass function is an
important statistic of the census of galaxy clusters in our Universe. It is also an important
means to probe the cosmological model of our Universe. Based on our recently completed
REFLEX II cluster sample comprising 910 galaxy clusters with redshifts we construct the X-
ray luminosity function of galaxy clusters for the nearby Universe and discuss its
implications. We derived the X-ray luminosity function of the REFLEX II clusters on the basis…

[HTML][HTML] The Gaia-ESO Survey: The analysis of high-resolution UVES spectra of FGK-type stars

R Smiljanic, AJ Korn, M Bergemann, A Frasca…- Astronomy &…, 2014 - aanda.org
Context. The ongoing Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey is using FLAMES at the VLT to
obtain high-quality medium-resolution Giraffe spectra for about 10 5 stars and high-
resolution UVES spectra for about 5000 stars. With UVES, the Survey has already observed
1447 FGK-type stars. Aims. These UVES spectra are analyzed in parallel by several state-of-
the-art methodologies. Our aim is to present how these analyses were implemented, to
discuss their results, and to describe how a final recommended parameter scale is defined…

A multicenter observational study on the role of comorbidities in the recurrent episodes of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo

A De Stefano, F Dispenza, H Suarez…- Auris nasus larynx, 2014 - Elsevier
Objective Primary objective of this study was to find a statistical link between the most
worldwide comorbidities affecting the elderly population (hypertension, diabetes,
osteoarthrosis, osteoporosis and depression) and recurrent episodes of BPPV. Secondary
objective was defining possible “groups of risk” for people suffering recurrent positional
vertigo related to the presence of a well documented comorbidity. Methods This was an
observational, cross-sectional, multicenter, spontaneous, non-pharmacological study. The…

Microwave drying of a low-rank sub-bituminous coal

CA Pickles, F Gao, S Kelebek- Minerals Engineering, 2014 - Elsevier
The moisture contents of coals are often too high and need to be reduced before further
processing. In this study, the application of microwave radiation as an alternative energy
source for the drying of a sub-bituminous coal was investigated. Firstly, the permittivities of
the coal were evaluated as a function of temperature and frequency. Secondly, the drying
kinetics were studied in a 2.45 GHz microwave system and the effects of incident microwave
power, sample mass and initial moisture contents were determined. The results…

Portable X-ray fluorescence analysis of mineral and organic soils and the influence of organic matter

CA Shand, R Wendler- Journal of Geochemical Exploration, 2014 - Elsevier
Portable X-ray fluorescence (PXRF) spectrometers with tube X-ray source are being used to
determine the elemental composition of soils in the laboratory and the field. Most studies
with PXRF have been with mineral soils and there is a need to assess PXRF applications to
organic soils and peats. Using a commercial PXRF instrument and the manufacturer's soils
programme we assessed performance by the analysis of various soils with a range of
organic matter concentrations up to those of low ash peats. We first analysed seven certified…
