Just in time for summer, Save Our Water, ScottsMiracle-Gro and Bonnie Plants are joining together to share ways Californians can use less water in their yards, while maintaining their beautiful landscapes amidst the state’s severe drought.
Outdoor water waste can add up fast, especially during the summer months. It is critical that Californians take steps to conserve, and conserving and being water smart around your yard is a key step to making water conservation a way of life.
To encourage stronger conservation efforts, ScottsMiracle-Gro launched its own water-savings website to help Californians care for their yards while using less water.
“Together with Save Our Water and our business partners at Bonnie Plants, we’re helping our consumers conserve our planet’s most important natural resource, water,” said Ashley Bachmann, vice president of marketing for ScottsMiracle-Gro.
“Whether it’s making small tweaks to outdoor watering or planting a drought-tolerant garden using herbs such as rosemary, lavender, and garden sage, California homeowners can make a big impact today.”
As you care for your yard this summer, here are some simple actions you can take to be water smart:
- Cut back on outdoor watering. When you must water, morning is best. Reducing the number of days you water your lawn, even by one, can save hundreds of gallons of water, and watering in the morning means plants and soil can absorb water before it evaporates.
- If you have a lawn, mow high. Grass that is three or four inches tall has deeper roots to better access underground moisture.
- Check for leaks. Replace cracked, leaky sprinklers and hoses so water isn’t wasted.
- Use mulch in planter beds. Mulch reduces evaporation and helps retain water where it’s needed – in the soil.
- Water your landscaping, not the sidewalk. Adjust your sprinklers to avoid watering sidewalks or install new devices that provide more accuracy.
