Save Our Water recently joined the City of Sacramento for their annual Water Wise Garden Showcase to share the importance of water conservation and provide Sacramentans insights into simple yet impactful ways to save water in and around their homes.
These tips showed how to make water conservation a daily habit and how these simple shifts can make a big difference.
The most important action Sacramentans can take is to make sure water isn’t wasted, especially outdoors during the summer heat. Save Our Water encourages the following best practices:
Plant water-wise plants. Using water-wise plants and trees can save up to 100 gallons each time you water.
Install drip irrigation and add a smart controller. Installing a drip irrigation system and a smart controller can save 15 gallons each time you water.
Water during cooler times of day. When you avoid watering during peak heat, you ensure that the water goes to your plants and is not lost to evaporation.
Adjust sprinkler heads. Using the right size sprinkler head ensures you are watering your plants and not the sidewalk. This simple measure can save at least 12 gallons each time you water.
Use mulch. Mulch helps retain soil moisture and conserves water. Using mulch can save at least 30 gallons of water each time you water.
The City of Sacramento also highlighted its River Friendly Landscape program to help make yard transformation projects more affordable for local residents. Check with your local water provider to see what resources might be available to help you transform your yard and save water.
