San Francisco 49ers join the effort to Save Our Water

Find more ways to help conserve around your home

Save Our Water and the San Francisco 49ers have teamed up to promote water conservation.

To kickstart the partnership, the 49ers created water-conscious signage around restrooms and water fountains and published a water conservation information webpage. Additional efforts by the team include the debut of a public service announcement in December that will feature star wide receiver Deebo Samuel encouraging California residents to go the extra yard for water conservation.

The 49ers know how to save water – currently 85 percent of all water used in Levi’s® Stadium is supplied through the City of Santa Clara’s recycled water system, making the stadium the first professional sports venue in California to utilize a drought-proof water source. Use of recycled water and installation of water-efficient fixtures have helped reduce water consumption in the stadium by 44 percent.

Going on offense to save water this football season is key to making this resource last for our children, grandchildren and future generations, as California experiences severe drought due to a changing climate.

The 49ers and Save Our Water are encouraging everyday habit changes and practices to save water. From checking for leaks to turning off sprinklers on rainy days, there are several impactful changes we can all make around the home.

Plays to Save Water:

By incorporating these small fixes at home, you can make a big impact toward our goal to save water:

  • Designate one glass or refillable water bottle for drinking water per day. Reducing the number of dishes that need to be washed, as well as washing full loads, can reduce water usage.
  • Reduce your time in the shower to 5 minutes. Taking shorter showers can save up to 12.5 gallons per shower.
  • Use a broom instead of a hose. Using a broom instead of a hose or power-washer to clean outdoor areas can save 8 to18 gallons every minute.
  • Set up a rainwater harvesting system. You can use water collected from rain to clean your deck, porch, and house exterior, to water flowers, trees, and shrubs, or for a compost pile or even your indoor plants.
  • Replace the flapper on your toilet(s). A leaking toilet can waste ¼ gallon every minute.
  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving your face. Turning off the water while brushing your teeth can save up to 8 gallons of water per day. For a family of four who brush their teeth twice a day, this simple switch can save almost 225 gallons a week. For a team of 53 players, that’s 742 gallons a week.
