Sacramento, CA – As extreme weather and drought continue to impact California and the Sacramento region into the fall months, Save Our Water and Sacramento Republic FC are teaming up once again, releasing a Public Service Announcement (PSA) demonstrating proper tree care while encouraging local residents to do their part to save water. The video builds on a partnership between the team and Save Our Water which launched with Republic FC’s new City of Trees kit in June
“We can maintain healthy trees and cut back on outdoor water use which is one of the best ways to conserve water,” said Margaret Mohr, Deputy Director of Communications at the California Department of Water Resources. “This video shows how to prioritize proper tree care during extreme drought and the importance of implementing water-wise practices in our yards to preserve our City of Trees and create a more water resilient future in California.”
In the PSA, which will be played in the team’s stadium on the video board before matches and shared on the club’s social channels, Republic FC Goalkeeper Danny Vitiello shares key tips to properly maintain trees and reduce water use:
- Deeply and slowly water mature trees one to two times per month
- Water young trees with five gallons of water two to four times per week
- Use recycled water to care for your trees
- Use mulch and carefully not over prune trees during a drought
“This latest effort in our partnership with Save Our Water provides more information to educate Sacramentans about protecting our region’s vital urban forest from the consequences of extreme drought,” said Executive Vice President of Business Operations Ashley Horsley. “Our City of Trees kit is a reminder that our environment is one of the special elements of our region, and that we all must do our part to help preserve it, including proper tree care and to be mindful of outdoor water use.”
The PSA comes as California starts Water Year 2023, which began October 1 and will continue through what is traditionally the state’s rainy season. Yet, following the driest three-year period in the state’s recorded history, the new water year brings fresh concerns about a fourth year of extreme drought in California. By utilizing the tips Vitiello shares in the PSA, residents can properly care for their trees and sustain the vital benefits they provide – like cooling and cleaning the air and water, providing shade and protecting the public from extreme heat – while saving water.
In addition to caring for trees, fall is also a good time to consider replacing lawns with waterwise plants.
