The New Year is often a time many of us set New Year’s Resolutions. So, what are your goals this year? Let us set you up for success with these five popular goals and ways to incorporate water conservation into your daily life.

  1. Pick Up a New Hobby! If you don’t already have a green thumb, consider learning about gardening with a focus on water-wise, native, or drought-tolerant options for your indoor and outdoor areas. As you explore all the possibilities that will suit your style and budget, you’ll find plenty of pollinator plants to invite birds or butterflies to your yard or vegetable plants. Start by checking out Save Our Water’s blog, “Spruce Up Your Garden with Water-Wise Plants
  2. Kick Bad Habits. Even small changes can lead to big savings! Commit to a resolution that will kick water-wasting habits. Get some ideas here.
  3. Explore New Places. Set aside some time to visit your local nurseries. Browse through the aisles to learn about water-wise landscape options, efficient irrigation, types of soil and mulch, sun requirements for plants, potting options, and much more!
  4. Challenge Yourself. Set a new challenge to reduce your water footprint in 2024! Do you know how much water you use each day? You can calculate the amount by using a water footprint calculator that measures the direct and indirect freshwater used by an individual or business. Take some time to learn your water footprint to understand how much water you are using, and then make a goal to reduce that number this year!
  5. Complete a Home Improvement. Nearly 40% of the water Californians use at home is used outdoors, so transforming a yard can save a significant amount of water. Taking on a yard transformation does not have to be an overwhelming commitment; it can be done in small and easy steps. Replacing your lawn with a water-wise landscape can save a significant amount of water. Many local water agencies offer yard transformation rebates of up to $3 per square foot. Be sure to visit saveourwater.com/yardrebates to see if your local water agency offers yard transformation rebates.
