Sacramento, CA – As extreme weather and drought continue to impact California and the Sacramento region, Save Our Water and the Sacramento River Cats are partnering to raise awareness of the importance of saving water. With California undergoing a climate transformation bringing hotter and drier conditions, the partnership stresses the continued need for conservation and highlights efforts the team is making to cut back on its own water use.
“As communities across the state grapple with extreme drought, we all need to do our part to help lessen the impacts,” said Greg Coletti, Vice President of Corporate Partnerships for the Sacramento River Cats. “We’re adapting to make water conservation a more permanent priority at the park, like updating our irrigation system, and are excited to engage with our fans and the Sacramento community on making saving water a way of life.”
Through Ewing Irrigation, the team uses wireless Spiio soil sensors that allows them to observe the soil salinity, soil moisture, and soil temperature on an hourly basis. By managing their irrigation programs more efficiently, the River Cats can avoid wasting water or over-watering.
Through the partnership, Save Our Water representatives will be at multiple River Cats games at Sutter Health Park this month talking with fans about helpful tips that can help them save water in their yards and home. The team will also showcase Save Our Water with in-stadium signage on September 26-28 when the River Cats take on the Las Vegas Aviators.
“Thank you to organizations like the River Cats who are stepping up to save water and helping to get the word out about water conservation,” said Margaret Mohr, Deputy Director of Communications at the California Department of Water Resources. “Cutting back on our outdoor water use by just one day a week is a simple yet meaningful way for Californians to reduce water usage. In the Sacramento region, most water waste happens in our yards, making it critical that we take steps to conserve, like cutting excessive watering, taking out lawns and planting drought-tolerant plants.”
