MEET OUR TEAM

Matt and Misty Penny

Matt, a native of Harnett County, spent his youth on the Crystal Coast before settling in Carteret County after graduating from NC State University. With over 15 years of experience in the canvas industry, he founded Salty Penny Canvas, leveraging his passion for offshore fishing and marine craftsmanship. His extensive knowledge of boats and boat owners’ needs sets him apart in the marine upholstery sector. Matt aims to produce a top-quality product and deliver exceptional service that will be valued by both captains and boat owners.

Similarly, Misty, also from Harnett County, made her way to Carteret County following her graduation from Mount Olive College. Armed with 18 years of experience in the financial industry, she joined forces with Matt to drive the growth of their business. She not only oversees daily operations, but also plays a key role in all stages of the fabrication process.

The couple, along with their daughters Savannah and Kyndall, and three dogs – Chico, Banks, and Tuffy, reside in Morehead City. In their free time, they are dedicated to supporting local businesses and cherishing moments with their family.

Fun Fact: On April 23, 2023, Ocearch tagged their 92nd white shark off the coast of NC, near Ocracoke, naming her Penny after Salty Penny Canvas. Coincidentally, this date marked Matt and Misty’s wedding anniversary.

Skylar Juarez

Skylar, a true Carterican, began her journey with us part-time in high school and swiftly transitioned to full-time during her senior year. We were thrilled when she chose to further her education at Carteret Community College, allowing her to deepen her expertise in the canvas industry. Working alongside Matt as his partner in the field, Skylar adeptly handles patterns and installations. But her skills extend beyond; she excels in all aspects of the fabrication process while in the shop.

Fun Fact: Prior to joining the Salty Penny team, Skylar cared for the Penny family’s children, leading to the amusing misconception that she is Matt’s daughter.

Paige Vader

Paige spent most of her childhood in Carteret County where she graduated from West Carteret High School. With a keen eye for creating exquisite pieces, she plays a vital role in all of the upholstery projects at the shop. Currently, she is furthering her education at Craven Community College. Paige resides in Havelock with her three children, Lyra, Maebre, and Salem.

Fun Fact: Paige is an exceptional baker, and the entire team eagerly anticipates when she brings in her homemade creations. Her baked goods are always a hit!
