In recent industry news, two leading companies are intensifying their focus on medical nutrition - specialized products for managing medical conditions - for an aging population. According to Market Research Future® (MRFR) and amidst efforts to meet rising demand, the Global Medical Nutrition industry is projected to grow from $53.58 Billion in 2024 to $106.84 Billion by 2032. This comes at a time when the global population aged 65 years or older is expected to more than double by 2050. Extending healthspan to keep people healthy for as long as possible demands proactive approaches from policymakers, legislators, and food safety governing bodies. This raises important questions: Is the food industry prepared for this rapid demographic growth? How can it innovate to meet their evolving needs?

In the 1960s, there were six working-age individuals for every retired person. Today, that ratio has shrunk to about three-to-one, and it's projected to drop to just two-to-one by 2035, according to the World Economic Forum 📉. The age dependency ratio measures the ratio of dependents (those younger than 15 or older than 64) to the working-age population (those ages 15-64). It helps gauge the economic burden on the working-age population to support those who are not economically active. This rapid shift underscores the increasing challenges posed by an aging population on global economic and social systems. As Dr. Mehmood Khan emphasizes, "Fewer and fewer younger people are expected to support more older people. Ignoring it is NOT an option."
