Back in the early ’00s, Americans didn’t drink as much mezcal as they do now. The last couple decades have seen the spirit boom and early in that cycle, bartender Phil Ward created a riff on the Old Fashioned cocktail at the bar Death & Co. that celebrated the spirit. But only so much. He actually cut the mezcal with tequila.
