“We’ve always had things that I would consider luxury,” Todd Snyder told Robb Report back in March. The American designer was reflecting on his standout fall-winter 2024 runway show at Pitti Uomo in Florence, which appeared to signal a more luxurious direction for his eponymous brand. Today, with the debut of Todd Snyder Collection, the Ralph Lauren alum (often mentioned as the heir apparent to his former boss) further signals his plans for the future.
“Creating looks for the [Pitti] runway and working with the gifted artists and weavers in Tuscany reminded me of why I became a designer in the first place,” said Snyder in a press release. Featuring a limited run of fashion-forward styles crafted from premium Italian and Japanese fabrics, Todd Snyder Collection will appear twice a year with garments being further distinguished by a white label and price point that tops out at around $3,000.
Dubbed San Cristóbal, the first drop was largely inspired by the work of modernist Mexican architect Luis Barragán, particularly the Cuadra San Cristóbal outside of Mexico City. “Barragán famously said that any building that ‘does not express serenity is a mistake,’” added Snyder, who applied the same school of thought to the collection’s slouchy tailoring.
While the vibrant colors and contrasts are pure Mexico, more technical influences run the gamut from 1980s Italian suiting to London tailor Frederick Scholte, who devised the popular “drape suits” of the 1930s that were marked by a nipped waist and comparatively broad shoulders. Coupled with open-weave linen shirting and textured knits, the tension of the rugged and refined conjures a nostalgic glamour that’s sure to transport you this summer.
