Fireworks at Dogwood Dell

Celebrate Fourth of July at Dogwood Dell with performances by the Richmond Jazz Band and a concert of patriotic and pop music by The Richmond Concert Band. Celebrate the 160th birthday of Richmond icon Maggie Lena Walker with a series of events hosted by the Maggie L. Walker Historical Site from Friday through July 20. Friday's kickoff event will feature a parade, live entertainment by The Love Movement and a Maggie L. Walker-inspired art show at Gallery 5. Parade will start at 5 p.m. from Maggie Lena Walker Memoria Plaza, W. Broad St & N. Adams St. and end at Gallery 5, 200 W. Marshall St. Performances will begin at 6 p.m. at Gallery 5. 160 years after Maggie L. Walker’s birth, her legacy and impact live on.

In a doubly rare discovery, eggs from large, jellyfish-eating sea creatures were found on an Outer Banks beach in North Carolina.
Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup helped invent rock ‘n’ roll. His 1946 song “That’s All Right" would become the first single Elvis Presley ever released. And yet Crudup spent his later years working on farms on Virginia's Eastern Shore. He received scant songwriting royalties because of an exploitative record contract. He died in 1974. The 70th anniversary of Presley’s recording of ”That’s All Right” is Friday. And while Presley's version is considered a cultural milestone, Crudup has received some recognition in recent years. The bluesman was briefly portrayed in the 2022 biopic “Elvis.” And the state of Virginia plans to install a highway marker honoring Crudup.
An Independence Day event is being held Thursday at the Virginia State Capitol by the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission.
Meantime, the school board’s auditor reported that more than 700 emails to the school district’s fraud, waste and abuse hotline went unopened for 10 years.
