What are the best practices for effective listening in Healthcare Management?
Healthcare management entails two disciplines that are, in a way, antagonic. While pure managers do not understand the technical aspect of healthcare, most physicians lack solid management training and experience. Strategic thinking is something that is not part of being an healthcare professional, as a physician normally treats a patient at a time. Therefore, listening to each other is crucial to ensure the challenges of the professionals and the managers are taken in consideration. Managers must go to the field to observe and listen every day’s challenges and physicians must actively participate and understand the challenges of healthcare management.

Why is receiving feedback important for improving your public speaking skills?
Public speaking is a something between an art and a science. It can be learned, but it takes time and a lot of practice, during which honest feedback from the right people is crucial. Mentioning what went wrong is the most important part and provide guidance to improve is key. I would not underestimate the importance of theoretical training, there are many techniques that need to be learned and mastered.

How can you remain neutral and objective during a group facilitation?
My experience is that the desired goal and output should be clearly defined. More than facilitating and remaining neutral, to avoid frustration and deviations during the discussion, this is the key in my opinion. Naturally, all the above considerations are important. Participants should be guided in a way that they don’t understand they are being guided, feeling free and confident to contribute, without deviating from the ultimate goal.
