Sobre nós

CIBIO – Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources - InBIO Associate Laboratory is an internationally recognized Research Unit in biological sciences conducting basic and applied research on the three main components of biodiversity: genes, species and ecosystems. Our mission is to develop world-class research in the areas of biodiversity and evolutionary biology. Our goal is to make a significant contribution to: - Advance scientific knowledge in the fields of biodiversity and evolutionary biology - special emphasis on the understanding of processes that lead to present-day patterns of biological diversity and on the principles governing the spatial partitioning of genotypic and phenotypic variation. - Integrate and deepen ecological, taxonomical and biogeographical knowledge at different scales worldwide - with a particular focus on the Iberian and Mediterranean biological heritage. - Use scientific knowledge to set and suggest appropriate conservation priorities and management tools - in collaboration with local and national agricultural, forestry and hunting authorities. - Provide top-level advanced training - MSc and PhD levels and short-term training courses. - Disseminate scientific knowledge and promote public awareness and appreciation of biodiversity. Established in 2002, since January 2011 CIBIO is part of InBIO - Research Network in Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology, Associate Laboratory, together with CEABN – Centre for Applied Ecology "Prof. Baeta Neves", Institute of Agronomy, University of Lisbon. CIBIO-InBIO fosters an international and multicultural research environment, currently hosting researchers from more than 17 countries, organized in 19 research groups. These groups focus their activity on biodiversity and ecology, evolutionary biology and applied ecology, and integrate experts in complementary fields, such as molecular and population genetics, phylogeography, population biology, immunogenetics, taxonomy, ecology, bioinformatics and computational biology, landscape management and conservation. In addition, the Centre provides various services to the community, including: - applied research on evaluation and use of genetic resources; - information and assessments for environmental impact studies, habitat and ecosystem monitoring and rehabilitation, and environmental planning; - next generation sequencing; and - scientific consulting.

OPEN POSITION Assistant Researcher | Biological Sciences (Ecology, Ecological Restoration, Rewilding) We are seeking to recruit an Assistant Researcher (Reference BIOPOLIS 2024-24) within the project wildE (HORIZON-CL5-2022-D1-02-05, Grant Agreement No. 101081251), funded by the European Union through the Horizon Europe Framework Programme. The project wildE (https://lnkd.in/eN54wXgb) introduces climate-smart rewilding as an innovative restoration approach to create climate benefits while also addressing other socio-environmental needs. The project gathers a multi-disciplinary team of leading European experts to develop a research and innovation programme addressing the climate-biodiversity nexus in tight association with the socio-economic dimension of large-scale restoration. The team will also project scenarios to assess Europe’s rewilding potentials under diverse land-use and climate change futures. wildE will (i) generate comprehensive case-comparative data on European rewilding trends and outcomes, (ii) quantify the net social, economic and environmental benefits, synergies and trade-offs related to rewilding and alternative land-use options; (iii) develop cutting-edge projections for future land use and climate scenarios; and (iv) develop tangible and readily accessible decision-support and management guidelines to enable policymakers, conservation managers, communities, and the private sector to co-construct climate-smart rewilding strategies as effective nature-based solutions (NbS) for meeting the EU’s climate and biodiversity targets. Embedded within an ambitious stakeholder engagement, communications programme, wildE research will enable climate-smart rewilding as operational large-scale NbS to effectively foster the natural capacity of Europe’s ecosystems for climate change mitigation, adaptation and biodiversity support. The position holder will carry out research activities related to the participation of BIOPOLIS-CIBIO in wildE, namely: (i) development of two rewilding case studies (Sabor and Antarr); (ii) field collection of biological data; (iii) assessment of the preferences and attitudes of stakeholders in relation to contrasting rewilding scenarios; (iv) synthesis and integration of knowledge generated by wildE case studies across Europe; and (v) and analysis of data collected and co-production of scientific publications. The position holder is also expected to collaborate in the general development of the project, including participation in meetings, communication and dissemination activities, production and revision of deliverables, among others. Working together, scientists and journalists will transform 26 scientific ideas related to Biology into engaging narratives for the general public. These pieces, authored by Biopolis researchers and crafted with the support of experienced journalists, will be published in PÚBLICO throughout August 2024, in print and digital format, with specially designed layouts and infographics. The Público news article on the launch of the project is available here: https://lnkd.in/dXzDW3Kn
