Martin Newland launches UAE paper

By Martin Stabe wirepost

Former Telegraph editor Martin Newland has launched his English-language newspaper for the United Arab Emirates, The National.

The Abu Dhabi-based, 80-page paper produced by nearly 200 journalists — many of whom were recruited from Fleet Street – will be printed six days a week, ArabianBusiness.com notes.

The new paper “faces tough challenge” because of the state of press freedom in the UAE, the Financial Times suggested yesterday.

The paqper will also face competition from four other English-language papers in the UAE.

Update: A slideshow of pictures about the making of The National is available on its website, TheNational.ae.
