Where there’s pain, there’s opportunity. And changes in consumer behavior, combined with rapid innovation in supply chain management are “stressing traditional supply chains to near-breaking points,” George Prest, CEO of international-trade association MHI, says in a 2015 MHI report. “Companies that continue to use traditional supply chain models will struggle to remain competitive and deliver orders that are accurate and on-time.”
At the same time, companies face a dearth of supply chain management talent. A survey by Deloitte Consulting found 71% of executives at multinational companies said it was hard to recruit senior leaders for supply chain management roles. The supply chain industry will need to make some 1.4 million new hires between 2014 and 2018, according to MHI, which also called the talent shortage a major barrier to innovation in supply chain.
While MBA programs can prepare graduates for roles in supply chain management, another option is becoming increasingly available at U.S. business schools: the specialized master’s degree in supply chain management. There are 21 supply chain management master’s programs at the top 100 U.S. B-schools. Four are in the top 25, while the bulk are offered in the middle 50% of schools.
