Harris vs Trump: How We Got Here

Harris vs Trump: How We Got Here

With the news that Kamala Harris is the assumed Democratic nominee for the November election, the presidential race looks very different than it did just over a week ago. Dan is joined by Ben Rhodes, a Former Deputy National Security Advisor for Obama and host of Pod Save the World, to look at the history that informs the platforms both candidates stand for. They discuss the development of the Republican and Democratic parties over the 20th century, the enduring appeal of the 'strongman' from before WWI to now and the changing landscape of campaigning in the 21st century due to social media and the internet. And, what would a Trump administration mean for the rest of the world? Ben offers his thoughts on that too.
Ben's show is Pod Save the World is a weekly podcast that breaks down international news and foreign policy developments

The Scottish Island, The Shipwreck and The Whisky

The Scottish Island, The Shipwreck and The Whisky

In 1941, the SS Politician ran aground off Eriskay in the Scottish Hebrides Islands, carrying 260,000 bottles of whisky. As war rationing gripped Britain, Hebridean islanders saw the wreck as a godsend. Under cover of darkness, they salvaged thousands of bottles, hiding them in caves, haystacks, and peat bogs. A cat-and-mouse game ensued with customs officers who were determined to stop the whisky smuggling.

Dan is joined by Laura Boon-Williams, Lloyd’s Register Foundation Senior Curator in Contemporary Maritime at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, who recounts the true story behind the beloved movie Whisky Galore and tells us about the spirit of this Hebridean community during wartime, merchant shipping in WII and why a seemingly endless supply of whiskey wasn't entirely a blessing.
You can find out more about Lloyd's Register Foundation's history and its work that supports research, innovation and education to help the global community tackle the most pressing safety and risk challenges. Just go to https://hec.lrfoundation.org.uk/
Produced by Mariana Des Forges and edited by Dougal Patmore. Peta Stamper is the production manager for this series, 'Ships that Made the British Empire'.

Thank You!

I have been “binge” listening to History Hit for the last few days (Music Unlimited Ad-Free) and each episode has been great. Great History podcasts like History Hit will be a gateway for younger generations to learn their history because it is very important to know and maybe understand to see how and why we got to where we “locusts” are at now.

The best episodes are the ones with leading World War I

Unfortunately Biased

I was enjoying this podcast immensely until the episode with Ben Rhodes as a guest. The episode Harris vs Trump was extremely biased painting the democrats party as saints and republicans as uninformed MAGA extremists. I am an independent and could clearly see through it. Shame on you. Educating listeners about history should not include your political opinions and misinformation.
