DIRTY DANCING: THE TRUE STORY BEHIND THE ICONIC 1987 BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE

DIRTY DANCING: THE TRUE STORY BEHIND THE ICONIC 1987 BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE

When the producer tried to pitch the idea she was turned down 43 times before a tiny independent named Vestron gave it a greenlight. The film budget was only $5million at a time when films cost $12 million on the average to make. The two co-stars had acted together before in the surprise hit "Red Dawn and the rumor was that they didn't get along too well. The weather extremes varied from 105 degrees F to 40 degrees within 43 days. When the final screening came, one movie exec said "burn it and collect the insurance". The two stars ended up having breathtaking chemistry. The film came in on budget. When it hit the theaters in 1987 people loved it- it made $40 million in its first few weeks. Then it went on to become the top grossing independent film ever made. It is still considered as one of the top 100 movies ever made. And it was inspired by a true story. This is the true story of Dirty Dancing-the Movie.

BEST OF (#25 OF 467) THE LEGEND OF THE LOST MORMON MINE

BEST OF (#25 OF 467) THE LEGEND OF THE LOST MORMON MINE

The Uintah Mountains of Northeaster Utah are one of the most scenic places in North America and said to be a prime destination for wilderness hikers, backpackers, and sportsmen. It also attracts gold seekers due to its history of being a source of gold deposits for both the ancient Aztecs and the early Spanish explorers, who enslaved many of the local Ute Indians and forced them into laboring in the mines. When the Mormons settled in Salt Lake City, 100 miles west of the Uintahs, they learned from a Ute Chief of the location of a rich mine in those mountains, but only if a pact could be made and kept that only one man could know the location. The secret to the location died with the descendants of the man who made that pact- and only a very few Utes know of its location. Legend has it they still guard it, and those who get too close don't come out alive.

12 BRAVE MEN OF FAITH: THE STORY OF JESUS'S TWELVE APOSTLES

12 BRAVE MEN OF FAITH: THE STORY OF JESUS'S TWELVE APOSTLES

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. The 12 brave men Jesus picked to spread the word of his resurrection and of the one God were regular men, fishermen, brothers, husbands and fathers, tax collectors- men who knew Jesus and had seen his deeds and believed in him. They were given the mission to spread the word across the known world- a world filled with non-believers and ruthless leaders. No Roman in those years would have believed that within 350 years Rome would lead in following the teachings of Jesus and his disciples or that by the year 2024 1/3 of civilization would be practicing Christianity. But the 12 Apostles and those who followed succeeded in changing the world. Most of them were murdered, martyred to discourage others, but they all had made their mark. This is the story and legend of Jesus's 12 Apostles and their mission to save the world from itself.

KILLER SHARKS: US vs.THEM: WHERE THEY ARE, AND HOW TO SURVIVE THEM

KILLER SHARKS: US vs.THEM: WHERE THEY ARE, AND HOW TO SURVIVE THEM

Shark attacks have been steadily on the increase for the past few years, and many people believe that this increase is due to federal and state laws limiting catches and protecting predator species like the Great White and the Bull Shark. Environmentalists are fighting against nets that protect swimmers but catch marine life and fighting any efforts to cull certain shark populations, going so far as to say that with 5 billion humans alive, and only 5,000 Great Whites, we can afford to loose a few more human lives. Two opposing groups have formed- those who want to save human lives and those who want to save the sharks - hence the title "US vs. THEM".

BEST OF 1001 ( #23 OF 465) ANNIE OAKLEY: TOP GUN OF THE WEST-HER INCREDIBLE STORY

Annie Oakley was a 5 foot tall American sharpshooter who overcame a very hard childhood to become an international celebrity traveling with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. She developed her skills early as a child hunting and trapping with her father until he died and she was indentured to a cruel family in Ohio which she later referred to as human wolves. In her lifetime she set more shooting records than any female shooter since, and provided inspiration for millions of women to assert themselves and reach for their goals. This is her story.

Top Notch Episode!

Thank you for the fun and enlightening episode on idioms. John Haggadorn is the “cat’s meow” as both a researcher and narrator! I appreciate his sense of curiosity and wonder and share his love of the English language. Thank you for making my day!

Another political ad

I used to enjoy this podcast but it has become more and more right wing, both in comments and topics. Most comments are done slyly, but it’s clear which way this podcaster leans and the influence he’s trying to peddle.

Too biased and elementary

I used to love this podcast until I listened to his Shark episodes… I’m not a Shark lover but these podcasts were a farce. He kept saying he wanted to give both sides of the story- but then he actually talks about a state getting on the “shark protection bandwagon”. That lost me and I had to delete the episode and unfollow. Let’s be clear- anyone can do a podcast these days. If one is talking history then it is vital to be professional and actually give all sides without bias. Once you cross that line- even with the subject of Sharks- you start to sound like any other hack. Sadness…. I’m still stunned that it was a Shark episode that made me drop this one… wow.
