About this ebook

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER and a Times, Spectator and Observer Book of the Year 2021

‘In the first decade of this century, it was unthinkable that a gender-critical book could even be published by a prominent publishing house, let alone become a bestseller.’ Louise Perry, New Statesman

‘Thank goodness for Helen Joyce.’ Christina Patterson, Sunday Times

‘Reasonable, methodical, sane, and utterly unintimidated by extremist orthodoxy, Trans is a riveting read.’ Lionel Shriver

‘A tour de force.’ Evening Standard

Biological sex is no longer accepted as a basic fact of life. It is forbidden to admit that female people sometimes need protection and privacy from male ones. In an analysis that is at once expert, sympathetic and urgent, Helen Joyce offers an antidote to the chaos and cancelling.

Meandering drivel largely about meaningless internet fights. The chapter on the jewish conspiracy to rule through transexualism was especially far fetched. The author cites no experience in the field beyond their 35k twitter followers, so it is understandable that they view the world through a lens of Twitter arguments (one story is shared about a police officer who complained about having to enforce hate crime laws, who was banned for making jokes about sexual assault on Twitter. Joyce simply sides with the officer against Twitter's judgement and compares the situation to a murder by the Gestapo, with no more mention of the hate crime issue) There are also massive factual errors throughout the book. She is unaware of basic facts about British law, at one point stating that there are two legislative bodies responsible for making laws (there are four) and that chattel slavery was never participated in by the British Empire (Joyce goes further and states that America's transgender population largely came about as a result of chattle slavery, without explanation or elaboration). All in all, a terribly written and edited book written by someone with an axe to grind and zero knowledge on the subject.

If I had to describe this book in one word, it would be unhinged. The author has no experience with the topic beyond arguments on Twitter, and it clearly shows. Trans people aren't trying to destroy society, they're trying to live their lives in peace; you're a moron if you believe otherwise.
