VC Central 2024: Key Insights from Patric Gresko’s "𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀" Keynote: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗩𝗖 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗶𝘀 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴: Europe's share of the global VC market reached 20% in 2023, with early-stage European VC representing almost a quarter of the global market. 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨.𝗦. 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗽 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Over the past five years, Europe has consistently produced more technology startups than the U.S., a statistic that surprises many and highlights significant growth and innovation within the European market. 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗩𝗖𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁: The best-performing fund in the EIF portfolio generated a 505% net IRR, with the top 10 funds averaging around 150% net IRR. Notably, 167 funds in their portfolio deliver over 10% net IRR, showcasing the financial viability of European VCs. 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀: The presence of serial entrepreneurs within VC funds has positively correlated with fund performance. Experienced entrepreneurs often attract top talent and contribute significantly to the success of VC firms. 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 = 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿? First-time and emerging fund managers are finding success in Europe. Many of these new funds are among the best-performing in their respective vintages, indicating that new entrants can compete effectively with established players. 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱: The average fund size in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) is €80 million, significantly lower than the European average of €175 million. Without sufficient capital, local VCs might not fully benefit from the growth of their portfolio companies, which could be acquired by more capitalized firms from other regions. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿:  Around 40% of venture fund commitments in CEE come from public sources. CEE VCs need to diversify funding sources and attract more private investors to ensure the long-term sustainability of the market. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗘𝗘 𝗩𝗖 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗺𝘀: In CEE, where 90% of General Partners (GPs) are male, there is a critical need to introduce more diversity. The EIF will scrutinize diversity efforts more closely in due diligence processes and encourage firms to recruit and promote female professionals. CC: European Investment Fund (EIF)
