At the Asia Clean Energy Forum 2024, AboitizPower Chief Corporate Services Officer Carlos Aboitiz called for a more realistic conversation about shifting to renewable energy (RE) sources. He emphasized that reliance on the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for assessing RE overlooks the costs of maintaining a reliable grid. Carlos pointed out that while renewables should be part of the energy mix, these sources cannot be the sole solution due to the intermittencies and additional system costs associated with energy storage. He stressed the need for other generation technologies to secure a stable power supply amidst the rising energy demand in the Philippines. GNPower Mariveles Energy Center Ltd. Co. (GMEC), jointly owned by AboitizPower subsidiary Therma Power, Inc., AC Energy Holdings, Inc. and Power Partners Ltd. Co., continues its five-year project to protect and restore five hectares of mangrove areas in Bataan. After a recent workshop and planting activity, 35 volunteers from the Tubo-Tubo Fisherfolks Association planted 1,000 mangrove saplings in GMEC's five-hectare adopted area in Barangay Tubo-Tubo in the municipality of Orani, Bataan. Supported by the Provincial Government of Bataan, the Municipality of Orani, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, this initiative advances GMEC's P.R.O.G.R.E.S.S. program, which stands for Protecting marine life, Reforesting land, Optimizing wealth from waste, Generating livelihood skills and income, Rehabilitating social infrastructure, Elevating educational opportunities, Safeguarding quality health access, and Strengthening disaster resiliency.
