The woman whose body was discovered wrapped in a mattress in the back of a car has been identified, and the driver of the vehicle has been charged.

Margot Lewis, 32, crashed her car in Olmsted County, Minn., on Saturday, June 22, police say in a criminal complaint reviewed by PEOPLE. Bystanders who stopped to help Lewis informed arriving deputies that they believed someone inside the car was injured or dead, according to the complaint.

Deputies allege that inside Lewis’ car was a body “wrapped in a bed sheet, a blanket, a futon-style mattress and a tarp.” The body, according to the complaint, was cold to the touch. Blood was also soaked into the bedsheet, deputies say.

The Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office says the person found dead in the car was identified as Liara Tsai, 35, of Minneapolis. She was found with a large neck wound around the carotid artery and had died prior to the car crash, the complaint states.

The complaint did not say how Tsai died or what connection she had to Lewis.

Lewis was subsequently charged with interfering with a dead body and is being held in custody in Olmsted County, court and jail records indicate. Her bail was set at $1 million. She does not have an attorney listed and it is unclear if she has entered a plea.

Tsai’s sisters told KTTC that she had just moved to Minnesota at the beginning of 2024 from Iowa City and had been a talented DJ.

Steven Seuling, who hired Tsai to work events, told the Star Tribune that she was also a “community and trans activist.”
