Jenn Tran Says She Regrets 'Steamy' Bachelorette Makeouts Because 'My Family Will Be Watching'

Being The Bachelorette comes with glamorous gowns, once-in-a-lifetime trips around the world and the chance to find your forever. But it also means millions of people watching you date more than two dozen men on national television — and new Bachelorette Jenn Tran knows her family will be tuning in when her season begins airing on Monday, July 8.

“I don't have regrets in any decisions that I made because I trusted myself very much, and I still do,” Tran, 26, said on the July 8 episode of Kaitlyn Bristowe’s Off the Vine podcast. “I think everything happened the way it was supposed to. I think that I regret the steamy makeouts because my family will be watching.”

Bristowe, 39, assured Tran that viewers “wanna see steamy makeouts.”

Tran said that while appearing on Joey Graziadei’s season of The Bachelor she “was so aware” of the cameras filming her.

“And then the second time around, I was like, what do you mean? I'm just living my life,” she continued. “So, like, in my head, I was like, this isn't gonna be televised anywhere. Mom and Dad will have to watch this.”

Still, Tran called shooting her season “the best time of my life” and told former Bachelorette Bristowe that she enjoyed not being able to use her cellphone while filming.

“It was the most freeing experience of my life because you just, like, when you're on your phone, you're constantly connected to Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, whatever it is, and then also the 500 people that you're texting, so your brain is overloaded with information,” Tran said. “And sometimes I feel like I can't have a conversation with a person because I'm thinking about what's on my phone.”

The physician assistant student said she thought it “was so nice” to have that desire “erased” while shooting The Bachelorette. She also understood that social media doesn’t present a full picture, and therefore anyone who judges her based on what they see online doesn’t really know her.

“At the end of the day, I have to realize that these people don't know me at all,” Tran said. “No. And I just have to keep living my life. And some days, I just don't even log on to Instagram because I'm like, I need a mental health break.”

Bristowe commended Tran’s ability to step away when needed.

“I love your generation,” the podcast host said. “Like, we didn't do that in my 20s. We didn't take mental health breaks.”

Tran admitted to PEOPLE that she received mixed messages about being the first Asian Bachelorette after host Jesse Palmer announced in March that she’d be taking the role.

“I won't say that it's all been positive because racism still exists,” she notes. “I have gotten a lot of hate messages, but along with that, I've also gotten so many people who have been so grateful to see somebody like me on their screen. I feel so grateful and honored that I get to do that for people because growing up, I never had that. I am becoming the role model that I've always wanted to see as a little girl.”
