A couple in Brazil was arrested after their 5-month-old daughter was mauled by a family dog when the parents went out to shop for a family barbecue.

Isis da Silva Sobrinho was asleep on a couch in the home in Cidade Oriental, a municipality in the Brazilian state of Goiás, when she was attacked on June 4, local outlets Portal 6, Globo g1 and Metropoles reported.

Her parents, who are not named in the reports, have been charged with manslaughter without intent to kill, Globo g1 and Ovale reported, citing local authorities.

Each of them were released after paying about $263 (Brazilian R$1,412), per the outlets.

According to Globo g1 and Ovale, the parents went out shopping while Isis’ uncle was preparing for a barbecue in the backyard.

He told authorities he did not realize the child had been left alone, per Portal 6.

The man, who is not named in the reports, told police that he noticed the child’s father leave but thought the mother was still in the home with the infant, per Portal 6 and Globo g1.

When he initially heard Isis cry, he did not pay much attention because he believed the child was in her mother’s care, he said, according to Portal 6.

But then he saw the child, and noting her condition, he immediately took her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The attack left the child with several bite marks and a torn pelvis, per Portal 6.

The dog belonged to the child's grandparents, according to Ovale. The dog had been with the family for five years, per Globo g1.

Authorities determined the dog had not been fed on the day of the attack, according to both outlets.

Police believe the dog may have been hungry at the time of the attack, Metropoles reported.

The local Civil Police (PC) is investigating the attack, per Portal 6, Metropoles and Ovale.
