Congressman Pat Ryan Celebrates the Acceptance of Triplet Brothers to United States Naval Academy

Ryan nominated Christopher, Christian, and Jonathan Recinos to the U.S.N.A; all three are at the Naval Academy today for Induction Day

The Recinos triplets are graduates of San Miguel Academy in Newburgh

NEWBURGH, NY – Today, Congressman Pat Ryan celebrated Newburgh triplets Christopher, Christian, and Jonathan Recinos’ acceptance to the United States Naval Academy (USNA). Ryan, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, nominated the Recinos triplets to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The Recinos brothers are 2020 graduates of San Miguel Academy in Newburgh. Ryan celebrated their accomplishments as they start “plebe summer” today on the Naval Academy’s Induction Day.

“Being accepted to a Service Academy is no small feat; to have all three of the Recinos triplets accepted to the Naval Academy is a historic accomplishment that speaks volumes of their character, integrity, and moral fortitude,” said Congressman Pat Ryan. “Their dedication to the values and work ethic instilled in them in the Hudson Valley, from their loving parents, and at San Miguel Academy, is admirable, and sets them up to be the future leaders our country so desperately needs. The entire Hudson Valley is proud of Christopher, Christian, and Jonathan. I’ll forever be ‘Go Army, Beat Navy,’  but there’s definitely three new Midshipmen I’m rooting for!”

“San Miguel Academy stresses the importance of character development and gratitude for the array of educational opportunities possible in this great country. To have three boys from our small program appointed to the Naval Academy is not only historic for our program, but is also quite meaningful for our nation,” said Father Mark Connell of San Miguel Academy.

“Entire school districts rarely have even a single academy applicant and impoverished inner-city schools seldom have even one. To have three applicants from a small middle school class, each with the resume to compete for one of the most competitive institutions in the country is a tremendous accomplishment,” said David Terwilliger, A320 Captain, Major, U.S.N. retired, who oversees San Miguel Academy’s STEMPilot program and is a graduate of the US Naval Academy and field representative for the U.S. Naval Academy Admissions.

Congressman Ryan graduated from the United States military Academy at West Point in 2004. He nominated Christopher, Christian, and Jonathan Recinos for admission to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The Recinos triplets then received appointments from the Academy to the class of 2028.

The Recinos brothers are originally from New Windsor and graduated from San Miguel Academy in Newburgh in 2020. San Miguel Academy is a small independent middle school in Newburgh, NY, founded in 2006 to break the cycle of poverty through education. Christopher, Christian, and Jonathan will join the ranks of many San Miguel Academy alumni who have gone on to serve their country either through ROTC or enlistment. Currently, two San Miguel Academy graduates are serving as commissioned naval officers in the Pacific fleet. Several others are reservists, some of whom have been called to active duty for extended periods.

Congressman Ryan serves on the House Armed Services Committee, which oversees the United States Service Academies. Ryan’s other nominees to Service Academies who received appointments for the class of 2028 include:

  • Alexandra Jordan Coffey of Wappingers Falls, to the United States Military Academy
  • Benjamin Joseph Walter of Warwick to the United States Military Academy
  • Benny Bryan Quinones Alfonso of West Point to the United States Military Academy
  • Conrad Quinn Wendell of Warwick to the United States Military Academy
  • Lars Robert Poutsma of Chester to the United States Air Force Academy
  • Tyshan Shamar Mitchell II of Montgomery to the United States Air Force Academy
  • Peter Sorio of Mount Kisco to the United States Merchant Marine Academy

Today, Thursday June 27, marks Induction Day at the United States Naval Academy, when first year Midshipmen report for a summer of physical and academic training before the start of the academic year. The United States Naval academy is among the most selective colleges in the country. Its class of 2027 received 14,727 applications. Of those, 1,379 were offered appointments to the Academy, with 1,175 accepting those positions.

Applicants to the United States Air Force, Merchant Marine, Military, and Naval academies must first receive a nomination from a member of either the U.S. Senate or U.S. House of  Representatives or can receive service connected nominations if they are currently enlisted in the U.S. Military. The U.S. Air Force, Military, and Naval academies also accept nominations from the U.S. President and Vice President. The United States Coast Guard Academy does not require a nomination. Nominated applicants then must apply to and receive an appointment from the respective U.S. Service Academy itself.
