BAYSIDE, QUEENS — Teachers at Marie Curie Middle School in Bayside are up in arms about a proposed grading policy that says they can't penalize students for late work, as long as the assignments are turned in by the end of the academic quarter, according to the New York Daily News.

"For late/missing work due to student failure to complete an assignment on time, students must also be given multiple opportunities to make up or turn in work regardless of due date and without academic penalty, up until the end of the current marking period," reads the draft proposal, obtained by the Daily News.

Since principal Henry Schandel introduced the proposal in September, teachers have protested that the policy would give students the idea that they can hand in papers whenever they want, the Daily News reported.

The policy is still under review, an education department spokesperson told the newspaper.

"We are laser-focused on students mastering academic content and the draft policy as written is academically sound and was distributed to teachers to solicit their feedback," Department of Education spokesperson Danielle Filson told the Daily News.

"It is not the current policy in place, and it was communicated to staff and watermarked as a draft for that reason."

Despite that, some teachers said they're already following the proposed policy — and that it's giving them more work.
