Ekionkiestha’ - Encounter

Cartier-Brébeuf National Historic Site

On September 14, 1535, near the St.Charles River, Donnacona, one of the chiefs of the Iroquoian village Stadacona, meets the French explorer Jacques Cartier and his crew. His sons, Taignoagny and Domagaya, are back after being abducted by Cartier in 1534 in Gaspé. This marks the first documented encounter between Iroquoians and Europeans near present-day Québec City.
