Tracy Chapman joins Luke Combs at Grammys 2024 for first ‘Fast Car’ performance in 15 years
Maybe together they can get somewhere.
Tracy Chapman made a surprise appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards on Sunday night to sing “Fast Car” with Luke Combs.
The reclusive folk singer, 59, joined the country music star, 33, onstage at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles for a duet of her signature hit, which she last performed in 2009.
She strummed an acoustic guitar while duetting with Combs before receiving a standing ovation from the audience, which included Taylor Swift, Oprah Winfrey and more stars.
Chapman released “Fast Car” in 1988 as her debut single, and it flew up the music charts after she sang it at Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday tribute concert.
The track went on to win a Grammy for best female pop vocal performance in 1989.
“Fast Car” reached a new audience last year when Combs included a cover of it on his fourth studio album, “Gettin’ Old.”

The “Beautiful Crazy” crooner’s version was an instant crossover success, becoming one of the most streamed songs of 2023 and winning two CMA Awards, which made Chapman the first black woman to ever take home a trophy at the Nashville-based ceremony as its sole songwriter.
The “Give Me One Reason” singer previously gave Combs’ cover her stamp of approval, saying she “never expected” to see her name on the country charts but was “honored” to be there.
“I’m happy for Luke and his success and grateful that new fans have found and embraced ‘Fast Car,'” she shared in a rare statement last July.
Combs’ rendition was nominated for best country solo performance at this year’s Grammys.
