Tina Turner dead at 83: Magic Johnson, Ciara and more react

Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars are mourning the loss of Tina Turner after she died at the age of 83.

The tragic news was announced on Turner’s official Instagram account Wednesday.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner,” the statement, which accompanied a black and white image of the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, read. “With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow.

“Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family.”

The statement concluded, “Tina, we will miss you dearly.”

Following the news, stars took to social media to send their condolences.

Singer Ciara kicked things off, writing via Twitter, “Heaven has gained an angel. Rest in Paradise Tina Turner. Thank you for the inspiration you gave us all.”

The “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll” died at 83 on Wednesday after a prolific career that spanned decades.

Tina — who was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in 2021 — sold more than 100 million records worldwide throughout her career, with songs including the anthemic hit “The Best” and her solo comeback single “What’s Love Got to Do With It.”



She scored her first and only No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the song, which kicked off her 1980s career resurgence.

Tina was 44 at the time, making her the oldest solo female artist to top the Hot 100 chart.

The singer and actress had 12 total Grammy Awards, including eight competitive awards, three Grammy Hall of Fame awards and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Piers Morgan also sounded off, tweeting, “RIP Tina Turner. Simply, the best.”

NBA legend Magic Johnson also mourned her loss via social media, writing, “Rest in peace to one of my favorite artists of all time, the legendary queen of rock n’ [sic] roll Tina Turner. I’ve seen her many many times and hands down, she gave one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. She always gave you your moneys [sic] worth.”

In a follow-up tweet, the former Lakers star added, “Tina would have so much energy during her performances and was a true entertainer. She created the blueprint for other great entertainers like Janet Jackson and Beyoncé and her legacy will continue on through all high-energy performing artists. Cookie and I are praying for her husband and all of her friends and family.”

Former CNN host Don Lemon shared on Twitter, “Damn. She was supposed to live forever. ‘Simply The Best.’ #TinaTurner #RIP.”

City Girls rapper JT also commented on social media, “I’m not gone [sic] lie, Tina turner passing touches my heart! Ever since her biopic I felt I knew her. Such a strong woman with a story that taught & inspired so many❤️.”

Meanwhile, close friend Martha Stewart shared a sweet snap of the two ladies snuggled up together in bed, captioned, “We loved Tina Turner. Goddess, Performer, Wonder Woman ! We will miss her so much!!!!!!!!!”

Nicki Minaj also took to Twitter with praise, “Omg, I just saw that Tina Turner passed. Legend & Icon & that doesn’t even scratch the surface. May she rest in perfect peace & may her legacy of brilliance & resilience live on forever. #SimplyTheBest

Mariah Carey posted a photo of the late songstress on stage in a sequin minidress, writing, “the words legendary, iconic, diva, and superstar are often overused and yet Tina Turner embodies them all and so many more – an incredible performer, musician and trailblazer.”

She continued, “To me, she will always be a survivor and an inspiration to women everywhere. Her music will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest in Peace, Queen.”

Another female powerhouse, Jennifer Hudson, reflected on Turner’s impact on the music industry.

Elvis Presley’s widow, Priscilla Presley, added on Instagram that Turner was “one of Elvis’ favorite performers.”

“When she took the stage, it was pure magic,” Priscilla went on. “I remember how she held an audience with an energy that was undeniably pure Tina! She has left a remarkable legacy and will be sorely missed by all.”

Even former President Bill Clinton reflected on his lasting love for the legendary songstress.

“I loved Tina Turner and will never forget meeting her when she came to Little Rock for a concert after releasing Private Dancer in 1984. We met again on her 67th birthday in St.Petersburg, where she and Elton John sang for a charity event,” he wrote on Twitter. “She still had it — talent, style, energy and authenticity — a priceless gift to music lovers everywhere. May she Rest In Peace.”

Beyoncé, who once graced the stage with the Turner for an epic performance during the 2008 Grammys, paid tribute to her “beloved queen” on her website.

“I love you endlessly. I’m so grateful for your inspiration, and all the ways you have paved the way. You are strength and resilience,” she wrote. “You are the epitome of power and passion. We are all so fortunate to have witnessed your kindness and beautiful spirit that will forever remain. Thank you for all you have done.”
