Lindsay Lohan’s ‘Falling for Christmas’ looks included a ‘nod’ to ‘Mean Girls’

Lindsay Lohan is back — with a tribute to her past.

In “Falling for Christmas,” her first major movie role in nearly a decade, the early aughts fave plays Sierra Belmont, a spoiled hotel heiress who tumbles down a mountain and ends up with amnesia — and although the sweet love story will warm the hearts of Netflix fans, her fabulous style has also wowed viewers.

“She is essentially playing two completely different characters, which gave us a lot of creative freedom,” the movie’s costume designer, Emerson Alvarez, told Page Six Style.

In true Christmas movie fashion, Lohan’s character falls in love with the widowed owner of a local inn called the North Star Lodge (played by Chord Overstreet) after he rescues her from the terrible fall, and fans see her style change from diva-ready looks to holiday sweaters along the way.

“We got to source a lot of designer, luxury pieces and custom looks for her in the beginning of the film that then contrasted drastically with her more subdued, aged lost-and-found wardrobe, which was a designer’s dream come true,” the costume designer shared.

Among the fabulous looks, there’s a nod to the actress’ iconic role in “Mean Girls” when Sierra sings along to “Jingle Bell Rock” à la Cady Heron while wearing a glamorous fur-trimmed pink ski suit — and it turns out the moment wasn’t a coincidence.

“I think this look was absolutely an intentional nod to ‘Mean Girls’ and I just love how over the top it turned out to be,” Alvarez said, sharing that “the pink ski suit was something written into the script from very early on, so we knew it was going to need to stand out.”

The Netflix costume pro said that she sourced the past-season winter wear from “a very high-end ski wear company based in Amsterdam,” but it “became quite a challenge” to track down the rest, as they needed four suits in total to account for stunts.

After finding more snow suits on retail websites, the designer shared that Lohan “was in love with” the outfit so much that she “actually ended up taking one of them home with her.”

In addition to scouring the Dutch retailer, Alvarez found Lohan’s wardrobe from a variety of brands ranging from high-end to high street, and one look was even a last-second department store find.

When choosing the dress Sierra would wear for the North Star Lodge’s Christmas party, Alvarez said none of the options he ordered seemed to be quite right, and in a last-ditch effort, she grabbed a red dress with spaghetti straps “at Nordstrom the night before we started shooting this scene.”

“I felt a great deal of relief when we tried it on the morning of and Lindsay, our director Janeen, and myself all loved it,” the costume pro shared.

The bell-sleeved jumpsuit is featured on the movie’s poster, with Alvarez sharing she “was so intrigued by how the sleeves resembled poinsettia flowers and how festive it felt.” Netflix

Another red moment came early in the film when Sierra rocks a flamboyant bell-sleeved jumpsuit she calls a “Valenyagi” creation, and while Alvarez noted that it was meant to be a custom design, she actually ended up finding the piece “on a very small, very random boutique site.”

At the end of the film, the character’s personal journey is evident, and Alvarez said she took care to reflect that through her wardrobe.

“She may have grown, but she is still an heiress after all!” she said. “I think her final look really reflected this, with the plaid blazer being a slight nod to the North Star and her softened character.”

Alvarez, who said the “Falling for Christmas” star “is in such a wonderful place right now,” raved about working with Lohan on set.

“Lindsay had some amazing insight on her wardrobe,” she said. “As a designer, it’s always really important to me to collaborate with your cast on their looks. Lindsay was fantastic in this regard and we spent a lot of time together brainstorming Sierra’s transformation.”

As for her Lohan’s recent off-screen transformation, Alvarez said the star’s current wardrobe choices – courtesy of new stylist Law Roach — are “a reflection of her stepping into her power as a grown woman.”

“Everything she has worn recently fells true to her, it doesn’t feel forced or unnatural, it feels like a balanced collaboration of who she was, who she is, and who she will become,” she concluded.

Fans won’t have to wait long for Lohan’s next Netflix appearance: she’ll star in the streaming giant’s upcoming romcom, “Irish Wish,” next year — and after her Christmas fashion extravaganza, we’re eager to see the actress’ Emerald Isle style.
