Malia Obama celebrates her 23rd birthday on the Fourth of July

Barack and Michelle Obama wished their daughter Malia a happy 23rd birthday — on the nation’s birthday.

The couple shared individual Instagram tributes to their older daughter as she rang in 23 on the Fourth of July.

“Happy Fourth of July, and Happy Birthday, Malia!” the former president wrote on social media. “It’s been such a joy to watch you begin to make your own way in the world with poise, grace, and humor.”

He also jokingly added, “I miss the days when you thought the fireworks were for you,” while sharing a throwback shot from when Malia was a little girl.

At least one follower related to celebrating a birthday on a holiday with such famed festivities, commenting: “Happy Birthday to Malia! ❤️ I was born on New Year’s Day and I use to think that the whole Time Square thing was about ME!!! 🎇 😂.”

The former first lady also shared a childhood snapshot of Malia while sharing kind words about her daughter.

“Happy Fourth of July, everybody—and also, happy 23rd birthday to our dear Malia!” she wrote. “It’s been a few years since we took this photo, but I know that she’ll always be my sweet little girl whose big hugs and big heart always lift up my day. Malia, we love you, and are so excited to see what this year will bring for you!

Malia was expected to graduate from Harvard University this year.

The Obamas’ younger daughter, Sasha, turned 20 years old last month on June 10, and got similar Instagram-tribute treatment from her parents, with her father writing that it’s “been a joy to watch you become the person we always hoped you’d be,” and Michelle saying Sasha would “always be my little girl, but I couldn’t be prouder of the woman you are becoming.”

Sasha is a student at the University of Michigan.
