Kate Winslet stopped director from editing ‘bulgy bit of belly’ in sex scene
Kate Winslet put her all into playing Mare Sheehan — and didn’t want any of herself to be edited.
The actress, 45, says she told “Mare of Easttown” director Craig Zobel to leave her body au naturel in a steamy sex scene with Guy Pearce.
A New York Times piece recounts that Zobel “assured her he would cut ‘a bulgy bit of belly'” from the scene, but Winslet told him, “‘Don’t you dare.'”
Winslet also said that she sent the HBO show’s promotional poster back two times because it was too retouched for her liking.
“They were like, ‘Kate, really, you can’t,’ and I’m like, ‘Guys, I know how many lines I have by the side of my eye, please put them all back,’” Winslet recalled to the outlet.
The Oscar winner — who plays a Delaware County, Pa., detective in the series — also noted that the crew used lighting to make her skin look duller and that they went to great lengths to find unflattering clothes.
“Listen, I hope that in playing Mare as a middle-aged woman — I will be 46 in October — I guess that’s why people have connected with this character in the way that they have done because there are clearly no filters,” the “Titanic” star explained. “She’s a fully functioning, flawed woman with a body and a face that moves in a way that is synonymous with her age and her life and where she comes from. I think we’re starved of that a bit.”
The British-born actress also tried to get real for her role by frequenting the American convenience store Wawa.
“It almost felt like a mythical place, Wawa … and so by the time I got there, I was like, ‘Oh, it’s real!’” she recently told the Los Angeles Times’ “Envelope” podcast. “It was like Lapland.”
“Walking into a Wawa ultimately felt, it was kind of an honor in a funny way because to me, that was the heart of Delco,” she added. “To finally walk through the door of a Wawa, I felt like, ‘Ah, yes, I’m here! I belong! This is where it’s at!’ Wawa.”
