The Metropolitan Museum of Art officially announced that its Met Gala with Vogue will return on September 13 with an American theme, after we exclusively broke the news last week.
The museum sent out a press release on Monday that the exhibit — which coincides with Vogue’s ball — will open in two parts, with a year between them.
“In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” will open September 18, and will “explore American fashion,” from sportswear to contemporary designers.
Held in the Anna Wintour Costume Center, the show has been inspired by the pandemic and will be set up in a fictional home — with rooms set up to reflect emotions such as fear, loneliness and happiness, per the release.
Curator Andrew Bolton explained, “Connections to our homes have become more emotional, as have those to our clothes. For American fashion, this had meant an increased emphasis on sentiment over practicality.”
Part two, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” will open May 5 next year in the American Wing and “explore the development of American fashion by presenting narratives that relate to the complex and layered histories of those spaces.”
The exhibit will feature clothing from the 18th century to today.
On Friday, Page Six exclusively reported that the Met Gala, which raises funds for the Costume Institute, would return after being canceled last year due to the pandemic. We also exclusively reported that poet Amanda Gorman is being eyed as host, along with CFDA chairman Tom Ford. Gorman is on the cover of Vogue’s May issue.
The gala — normally held the first Monday of May — has been pushed to September 13. A source said it won’t be be on the first Monday, because that date is already occupied by Labor Day.
“Even Anna Wintour can’t change a federal holiday,” said the insider.
The black-tie ball is known as fashion’s biggest night, and has included guests from Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Kim Kardashian to Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and CAA’s Bryan Lourd.
