Eliot Spitzer and fiancée Roxana Girand have canceled their big “raucous” New York wedding due to coronavirus.
The former “Luv Gov” and Girand had planned a grand April 4 wedding with dinner and dancing at the Bryant Park Grill.
A full weekend of events had been planned, including a bowling party the night before the big bash at Bowlmor Lanes in Times Square. Now, they plan to wed at a small, family-only event.
Spitzer and Girand wrote in a joint email to family and friends on Friday, “We have been so excited about the prospect of sharing our wedding with those whom we love — our closest friends and family. The party would have been joyous and raucous.
“Reality, in the form of the dreaded covid-19 virus, unfortunately, has intervened. It would be self-evidently unwise to go forward with a party on April 4 requiring travel and creating the possibility of transmission of the virus.
“We intend — nonetheless — to get married in an appropriately small, family-only event either on the 4th of April or before. No virus will subdue us!
“Those of you who had hoped to display either bowling, dancing, toasting, or even ping pong skills on the weekend of April 4 — fear not. We promise you a remarkable celebration at a date to be announced shortly.”
They added, “The world belongs to optimists.”
Spitzer and Girand last week were spotted picking up their marriage license at City Hall, where he cracked a joke about his divorce from first wife Silda Wall making the front page of The Post.
A witness told us, “They were talking with the woman behind the counter, who said to them, ‘You can verify your divorce dates,’” the source said.
“[Spitzer] said: ‘It was in 2014. It was in the New York Post.’”
“The woman behind the counter just did not get it at all,” the source added.
The former New York governor’s marriage to Silda, his wife of 26 years, was torpedoed in part by the prostitution scandal that forced him to resign in 2008. Girand is also divorced.
Spitzer, 60, who was dressed in a suit and blue tie at City Hall, appeared in “good spirits,” the tipster added.
Meanwhile, Girand, 48, founder and president of real estate agency Sebastian Capital, kept it casual in a black shirt, matching puffer coat and gold sunglasses.
The pair, who have been engaged since at least September, shelled out the $35 for their license and have 60 days to walk down the aisle from the day their license is issued.
