Madonna rips London theater for dropping curtain on her past-curfew show

Well, she’s not known as “the Punctual Girl.”

Madonna unleashed a profanity-ridden rant against London’s Palladium Theater after they lowered the stage curtain and shut the lights and sound off on her Wednesday night show, which was running past the theater’s 11 p.m. curfew.

In a video posted to Instagram, Madge yells “motherf—ing censorship” repeatedly and adds, for some reason, “artists are here to disturb the peace.”

In the caption to the video, she writes, “It was five minutes past our 11 p.m. curfew, we had one more song to do and The Palladium decided to censor us by pulling down the metal fire curtain that weighs nine tons. Fortunately they stopped it halfway and no one was hurt. Many thanks to the entire audience who did not move and never left us. Power to the people!!”

It’s not clear where, exactly, Madonna got the idea of a metal fire curtain from, when, in the video, the only thing seen obstructing her is the theater’s red stage curtain, from which she emerged and finished the show with her dancers, without the benefit of the theater’s sound system.

“Contrary to a number of reports, at no point during last night’s performance did staff at The London Palladium pull down, or attempt to pull down, the Iron Fire Curtain,” a spokesman for the theater told the BBC.

Perhaps upsettingly for anyone who lived through the rise and fall of the actual Iron Curtain, Madonna apparently already had it in her head to paint her lateness as government resistance. According to the BBC, she told the audience at the first Palladium show last week, “I’ve been warned [against breaking curfew] by Westminster council,” adding that she “knew an ‘iron curtain’ would fall over the production” if she ran late.

Madonna’s shows — even the ones that go on uncancelled — tend to start and end late as a matter of course. In fact, a number of U.S. fans have recently taken legal action against her for starting her shows so late, with separate lawsuits being filed in Florida and Brooklyn. She’s also — at least in Miami — shut off venue air-conditioning for her shows, snapping “F–k you, I’m cold” at fans who started chanting “A/C” in response to the heat, according to the Miami New Times.
