Megxit summit over: Queen says she ‘would have preferred’ Harry, Meghan chose differently

The historic Megxit summit is over — and Queen Elizabeth II immediately issued a statement Monday saying that while the royal family “would have preferred” Prince Harry and Meghan Markle keep their senior palace duties, she is “entirely supportive” of the couple.

“Today my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family,” the British monarch said in a statement on Twitter.

“My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a royal family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.

“Harry and Meghan have made it clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives,” the statement added.

“It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the UK.

“These are complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in coming days,” the queen said.

The tense royal round table lasted about two-and-a-half hours, according to a report.

A grim-faced Prince Charles was the first one spotted driving off from the home-base estate of his mother around 4:30 p.m. local time, The Sun of Britain said.

Harry and his older brother, Prince William, followed separately soon after.

Harry had arrived arrived early for the summit, while William dodged having lunch with his sibling and showed up just 15 minutes before meeting time, a report said.

Harry was driven around to the back entrance of Sandringham in Norfolk, England, in a Range Rover Evoque with blacked-out windows around 11:20 a.m. local time, the Daily Mail said.

His grandmother the queen was already at the estate, where lunch was being prepared for early arrivals. Prince Charles also was at the home, having flown in by helicopter Sunday, the Mail said.

But William didn’t arrived from his Anmer Hall property — just 2 miles away — until around 1:45 p.m., the site said.

The royals were gathering for the 2 p.m. historic summit to discuss Harry and his wife’s controversial plan to split from the palace — which includes discarding their senior duties and living, at least for now, in Canada. She reportedly joined the discussion by telephone.

Harry was said to be “heartbroken” over having to make the decision but that his American wife of two years told him that the current set-up, including uber-intense press scrutiny and family pressures, was “not working” for her.

With rumors flying, the princely brothers took the extraordinary step Monday of issuing a statement in the morning angrily denying that William had bullied Harry and Meghan out of the family.

Meanwhile, Prince Philip, Elizabeth’s husband and the princes’ grandfather, was said to be furious about Harry and Meghan’s plan and was seen being driven from Sandringham on Monday before any of the parties arrived.
