Renée Zellweger’s accent at Golden Globes 2020 confuses fans

Renée Zellweger let her Texas roots shine at the 2020 Golden Globes.

The 50-year-old actress confused viewers when she shifted accents during her acceptance speech Sunday night for her role in “Judy.”

“Well hi everybody, it’s nice to see you,” she began in her usual intonation before adding with a twang, “Y’all look pretty good 17 years later.” She won for “Chicago” in 2003 and “Cold Mountain” in 2004.

As she continued to give thanks to those who helped her along the way, her accent shifted several times.

Her rep told Page Six that her accent is nothing new, saying, “She’s always had a Southern accent. Perhaps viewers who haven’t heard it before haven’t heard her speak before. Google interviews with Renee and it’s clearly her normal usual accent.”

But several fans took to Twitter to ponder the change.

“I was today years old when I found out Renee Zellweger had a thick country accent,” tweeted one viewer.

“Renee Zellweger is such an interesting person. Has she always had a southern accent? remember when she disappeared for a while and came back looking 100% different and just pretended it wasn’t a ton of surgery,” added another of Zellweger’s plastic surgery rumors.

Others, however, pointed out that she is from Texas and therefore doesn’t deserve such heat.

“Renee Zellweger’s real voice is a big ol’ Texas drawl,” tweeted one fan. “She is so gifted at accents that some of you didn’t know that till tonight. (Bridget Jones is the only good British accent by an American.)”

Another added, “People wondering about Renee Zellweger ‘s ‘accent’ might wish to consider the following points: 1. We haven’t heard much from her for several years, until this triumphant comeback. Thus, she might seem brand new. 2. She’s from Texas. Really.”

Zellweger did explain after the awards show that her “brain was scrambled” on stage and she didn’t get to say everything she wanted, adding, “As you know, adrenaline and memory don’t mix, apparently,” according to USA Today.

She took home the Golden Globe award for best actress in a drama motion picture for her title role as Judy Garland in “Judy.”
