The two alleged sexual assaults Harvey Weinstein was charged with in Los Angeles on Monday came just before the 2013 Oscars, where his films took home an armful of awards.
The now-disgraced producer attended the 85th Academy Awards on Feb. 24, 2013 in Hollywood with his former fashion designer wife Georgina Chapman, who was pregnant with their son at the time.
Days before he walked the red carpet, on Feb. 18, 2013, Weinstein, 67, allegedly showed up to a room at the Mr. C Beverly Hills hotel where an Italian model was staying.
He forced her to perform oral sex and raped her after she let him in, prosecutors alleged on Monday.
Weinstein then threatened her life if she disclosed the attack, according to court documents.
The following evening, he allegedly met another woman at a Beverly Hills hotel for a business meeting, and convinced her to follow him to the bathroom in his suite.
There, the woman said a naked Weinstein prevented her from leaving and “turned her around and held her in place by her breast as he masturbated until he ejaculated on the floor,” court papers said.
The celebrated movie mogul would be the toast of Hollywood a few nights later at the Oscars, where his films “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Django Unchained” and “The Master” were nominated.
His movies earned several accolades, including Jennifer Lawrence’s first Academy Award and Oscars for director Quentin Tarantino and actor Christoph Waltz.
But the shadow of his alleged sexually predatory behavior still hung in the room.
Comedian Seth MacFarlane notably joked, after listing the nominees for best supporting actress, that: “Congratulations, you five ladies no longer have to pretend to be attracted to Harvey Weinstein.”
In 2017, after several women came came forward with sexual assault and harassment allegations against Weinstein, the “Family Guy” creator admitted he made the dig because he’d learned the fallen film veteran had preyed on pal Jessica Barth.
“Make no mistake, this came from a place of loathing and anger,” MacFarlane said.
The victims in the Los Angeles cases reported the alleged attacks to police in 2017, after hearing about other women coming forward with accusations against Weinstein, LA County District Attorney Jackie Lacey said at a press conference.
It took more than two years to bring charges, as the women were reluctant to open up at first.
“It was very challenging to get those victims to open up and tell us what they needed to tell us, for some it was embarrassing, it was terrifying, and we were working to see if we could get the evidence we needed to get to court,” said Lacey.
The charges were filed on the eve of Weinstein’s highly-anticipated rape trial in New York, where he is facing allegations involving three women.
Eight women have alleged that Weinstein sexually assaulted them in LA County, with a statute of limitations barring prosecutions in three of the cases, Lacey said.
“We continue to investigate allegations involving three other women to determine if additional criminal charges will be filed,” she added.
Weinstein has categorically denied having non-consensual sex.
