Fans of Marlon Brando will soon have the chance to own a piece of cinematic history.
The Rolex GMT-Master watch that the actor — who passed away in 2004 at the age of 80 — wore in the film “Apocalypse Now” is going up for auction.
The iconic timepiece will be one of the items on the block during Philips and Bacs & Russo’s “Game Changers” auction, set to take place on December 10 in New York.
According to a press release about the event, items for sale that evening will also include “iconic collectors’ models from leading brands that have changed the course of watchmaking and watch collecting, alongside other important timepieces that are outliers in terms of provenance, aesthetics, condition and rarity.”
Brando not only wore this particular Rolex while playing the legendary role of Colonel Walter E. Kurtz in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1979 masterpiece, but also hand-engraved the caseback with “M. Brando.”
The watch remained in the Oscar winner’s possession until 1995, when he gifted it to his daughter, Petra Brando Fischer. This marks the first time the watch has ever been shown to the public or offered for sale since he acquired it in the early 1970s.
The press release added that although Brando was told to remove his Rolex during filming, he argued, “If they’re looking at my watch, then I’m not doing my job as an actor.”
