Ed Sheeran and Cherry Seaborn made it official … in secret.
Sheeran, 28, confirmed on Friday that he and longtime girlfriend Cherry Seaborn tied the knot in an interview with Charlamagne tha God about his new album. In his new song with Eminem and 50 Cent, “Remember My Name,” he refers to Seaborn, 27, as his wife: “Watch how the lyrics in the songs might get twisted / My wife wears red, but looks better without the lipstick.”
Sheeran said that he wrote the lyrics to the song before officially getting hitched. “It was actually before me and Cherry got married, and I knew that we’d be married by the point that the song came out,” he said. “Someone’s gonna hear that and be like, ‘Oh, they’re married!’ I didn’t know how that would be construed, but obviously it’s already come out.”
He also mentioned his nuptials when reflecting on the lead single from the album, “I Don’t Care,” featuring Justin Bieber. According to him, Seaborn was the one who suggested collaborating with Bieber.
“Bieber just got married. I’d just got married,” he explained. “That song is about being at an industry event with the woman you love, or the person you love, and kind of being like, ‘F—k this, let’s just have fun ourselves.’”
Sheeran and Seaborn first met as children and became romantically involved in 2015, according to People. The couple announced their engagement in January 2018. “Got myself a fiancée just before the new year,” Sheeran posted on Instagram at the time. “We are very happy and in love, and our cats are chuffed as well xx.”
In February, The Sun reported that they had wed in an intimate ceremony at their home in Suffolk, England, over the Christmas holiday. The article also claimed that they were planning a larger celebration for the summer.
Sheeran isn’t the only celebrity to recently make a surprise wedding announcement. On Thursday, Page Six confirmed that Heidi Klum wed musician Tom Kaulitz in late February. The supermodel, 46, had been married twice before tying the knot with Kaulitz, 29.
