June Ambrose apologizes for asking if late designer Kate Spade was at the CFDA Awards

Famed costume designer and stylist June Ambrose is in hot water for a statement she made at the CFDA Awards on Monday night.

During the CFDA’s Instagram Live, Ambrose interviewed fitness influencer Hannah Bronfman about her Kate Spade dress for the evening, asking her multiple times if the late designer would be joining her or if she had walked by her on the red carpet.

“I’m here with Kate … Well, the team from Kate is here, and we’re four total,” Bronfman tactfully replied as the costume designer seemed unaware that Spade died last year.

On Tuesday, Ambrose tweeted, “Good morning I want to address an error I made last night while hosting the CFDA red carpet. I sincerely apologize to the family and friends of the late Kate Spade, in addition to the team at Kate Spade for having misspoken. I made a mistake and I’m sorry to those I offended.”

Fifty-five-year-old fashion designer Spade hanged herself in her Park Avenue apartment in June 2018. Her husband of 24 years and longtime business partner, Andy Spade, released a heartfelt statement following her passing, writing, “Kate suffered from depression and anxiety for many years. She was actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease, one that takes far too many lives.”

He added that her death was “a complete shock.”
