Jennifer Lopez may have looked confident and happy on the 2019 Met Gala red carpet, but the pop star’s journey to get there was an emotional one.

In a behind-the-scenes video posted to her YouTube account about the making of her custom Versace gown, Lopez said, “Obviously, we’re saddened this year and cried during our first fitting, putting on this gown.”

The “Medicine” singer, 49, was feeling emotional because of her close relationship with Luigi Massi, one of the designers at the fashion house who passed away last month at the age of 53 following a heart attack. Her dress was one of the last pieces he worked on.

“Knowing Luigi was making this gown when he passed away. It’s difficult, but at the same time it’s also a celebration of his work,” the Grammy winner explained.

The silver beaded gown took 50 days to complete, and it took Lopez an additional seven hours just to look picture perfect for fashion’s biggest night.
