Serena Williams talks sister’s murder in new web series

Serena Williams talked about losing her sister to gun violence in the first episode of a new web series, “DiversiTea.”

The tennis legend, 37, sat down with 12-year-old activist Naomi Wadler to discuss how the epidemic of gun violence has affected black women for the premiere of the new series.

“I was affected personally by gun violence, my sister unfortunately passed from that,” Williams said in a preview of Friday’s episode.

Williams’ half-sister Yetunde Price was shot and killed while sitting in an SUV in Compton, Calif., in 2003. She was 31.

She added, “People are talking about it now because it’s happening more widespread. But it’s been affecting our community for years.”

Williams told Naomi that she believes it’s important to talk about such difficult issues so that people are aware problems exist and can start trying to solve them.

“I think we need to get comfortable with having uncomfortable conversations,” she said. “Situations are never really gonna get better if you always avoid it, you have to take it head-on.”

The first episode of “DiversiTea” will be available on Ellentube on Friday.
