Chopper-obsessed neighbor could leave Billy Joel in helicopter hell

One of Billy Joel’s super-rich Long Island neighbors uses his chopper so much that the town’s mayor may restrict all helipad use including the Piano Man’s.

Hedge fund founder Clive Holmes, who owns a palatial estate complete with private cottages and a pond on Centre Island, uses his helipad incessantly, commuting twice a day and frequently taking friends on joy rides, says Mayor Larry Schmidlapp.

“He has speakers and lights and the helicopter makes a heck of a lot of noise. The people on this island deserve some peace and quiet.”

Because of Holmes’ constant coptering, the village board is now planning to enact a permanent resolution prohibiting more helipads from being built, and limiting how many times any of the three existing landing spots already on the island — including Joel’s — could be used in a month, said Schmidlapp.

The village board will choose a number that will only allow the helipad owners to use them a handful of times a month.

A man who identified himself as a caretaker on Holmes’ estate said the property was too big for him to try to find the banker.

Joel’s reps did not return calls for comment.
