Shannen Doherty mourns Luke Perry after renewed friendship

Shannen Doherty says she is “devastated” following the death of her former “Beverly Hills, 90210” co-star Luke Perry, adding that they reconnected in recent years amid her breast cancer battle.

“Yesterday morning I got a phone call that devastated me,” Doherty wrote on Instagram on Tuesday. “I’m struggling with this loss and am having a hard time with my thoughts. But, my heart goes out to his family and friends who were blessed by his light in their (and mine) lives. Processing this is impossible right now.”

Perry died on Monday at the age of 52 after suffering a massive stroke.

Doherty told People late Monday that although she and Perry hadn’t kept in touch after their hit show went off the air in 2000, he got in touch with her in 2015 after she publicly revealed that she had been diagnosed with cancer.

“Luke reached out to me during my cancer journey and we picked right back up, albeit older and wiser, but that connection remained intact,” she said.

In September, the actress said she was in remission following chemo, a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.

There has infamously been talk about Doherty feuding with her “90210” castmates, and star Tori Spelling even admitted to getting her producer dad, Aaron Spelling, to fire Doherty because of her alleged on-set antics.

A “90210” revival was announced last week — and neither Doherty nor Perry had signed on. But Doherty said the two actors had spoken about working on a different project together.

“There is a special kind of love one has for each other when you are experiencing the journey we did on ‘90210’ and of course life in general. Luke and I were working on show ideas for us,” she told People. “We wanted to work with each other again and create something special and meaningful for our fans at this stage in our lives.”
