Oscar-winning composer André Previn, the ex-husband of Mia Farrow and adoptive father of Woody Allen’s wife Soon-Yi Previn, has died at the age of 89.
The accomplished jazz pianist and symphony conductor, who won four Oscars and 10 Grammy Awards, died at his home in Manhattan on Thursday, his manager said.
Berlin-born Previn was infamously married and divorced five times, including to actress Farrow, his third wife.
Farrow tweeted Thursday, “See you in the Morning beloved Friend. May you rest in glorious symphonies.”
Farrow and Previn married in 1970 before having three biological children and adopting three others, including a girl from South Korea named Soon-Yi.
Farrow and Previn divorced in 1979, but their personal lives would remain in the headlines for decades to come after it was revealed that Soon-Yi was in a sexual relationship with Farrow’s then-partner, film director Allen.
The affair, which became national news in 1992 when Soon-Yi was age 22, tore the family apart.
In a 2013 Vanity Fair article, Previn said of his adoptive daughter: “She does not exist.”
Soon-Yi went on to marry Allen in 1997 and together they have two adopted children.
Previn went on to marry twice more and father two more children.
A child prodigy whose family fled Nazi Germany, Previn received a total of 13 Academy Award nominations and is one of the few composers to win back-to-back Oscars.
His Oscar wins include for “Gigi” in 1958 and “Porgy & Bess” in 1959 while he was still in his 20s. Also on his resume was the 1964 classic “My Fair Lady.”
In 2010, he was recognized with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and has been lauded for his ability to combine jazz, pop and classical music.
