Ben Platt knew that if he chose to reveal the intimate details of his personal life on his debut album, “Sing to Me Instead,” he would have to be all-in.
“I only wanted to take this leap if I was going to present every part of myself,” the 25-year-old told People. “It’s been the first opportunity to represent my relationships and the men that I’ve loved.”
Platt, who revealed he was gay as a preteen, said he began writing songs following his departure from the Tony-winning Broadway musical, “Dear Evan Hansen,” in November 2017.
“If I was going to write about people I loved, I wasn’t going to pretend they weren’t men just because I hadn’t talked about that before,” he said, noting some of what he penned showed a “rollercoaster of a relationship that is an amalgam of ones I’ve had.”
While Platt has always had the support from loved ones — “I was lucky enough to grow up in a place where it was warmly accepted, particularly by my parents” — he’s ready to share all of himself with a greater audience.
“It’s completely me. I’m getting to share without any filter of character or writing,” Platt explained. “But I really am loving that feeling.”
On Wednesday, Platt also dropped the music video for his single, “Ease My Mind.” His album is set to be released March 29.
